Yes,Zenith El Primero and the Swiss company joint force Caliber 11 are the first to come to watch geek’s mind when talked about automatic chronograph, however, it is Seiko that actually launched the first automatic chronograph movement6139 and made it available in the market in May 1969.

With this 6138 movement, Seiko hastakenone step further in the automatic chronograph movementby fitting an hour counter sub-dial in the movement. With this new feature added to the movement, theuser of the watch can time accurately beyond 1 hour and for hours within a day.

Seiko movements are known to be durable and tough,so tough that it has been taken into space byastronautColonel William Pogue in his 1973 space mission. Pogue took the bigger brother of the 6138 the Seiko 6139 as a personal item during his space mission and the watch survived the mission without a single problem.

There are a number of special 6139 case reference, this particular one 6138 0040 “Bullhead” we are offering was fitted with a black dial with navy blue subdial on top. To give the watch an easytime measure reading, the chronograph was fitted with a contrasting yellow second hand adding thesportiness toward the watch. The Bullhead with its almost 50 years of history has been nicely preserved. The lume of the watch was aged to amazing patina yellow and the tachymeter bezel was aged to an amazing dark grey.

This special reference Bullhead gained its name from the position Seiko place the watch’s crown and pushers. The two pump pushers resemble the horn of a raging bull. Seiko placed it in this position to avoid the discomfort the push press against the wrist while wearing and also enable racing drivers trigger the chronograph function of the watch easier. This is truly a unique feature you don’t get to see in modern time watches.
