Description
Its no secretwe absolutely love dive-style watches here at Bulang and Sons.
Whether its a Rolex Submariner, an Omega Seamaster, or one of these Fifty Fathoms by Blancpain. The look is pure, tough, and timeless. We believe it will never go out of fashion!
This Barakuda variant of the Fifty Fathoms, specifically, was first issued to the German military by Barakuda in the 1960s. Barakuda was a supplier of specialized diving equipment, and the frogmen who received these watches carried out numerous underwater missions. They needed a timepiece that could perform flawlessly with the ever-changing tides of the sea.
Originally developed for military use, the Barakuda was later made available to the civilian market. While exact production numbers remain uncertain, its widely believed that only around 150 pieces were ever produced.
One of the most distinctive features of the Barakuda is its bold two-tone hour markers. A flash of red at the base of each marker adds a subtle pop of color, bringing a touch of flair to an otherwise understated, monochromatic design. This unique detailpaired with its military heritagehas made the Barakuda a highly prized piece among Fifty Fathoms collectors.
The dials of the original Barakuda and the modern re-edition share a striking resemblance. Both feature the iconic two-tone rectangular hour markersbeginning with a red accent and transitioning into creamy luminous blocks. In the re-edition, old lume Super-LumiNova is used to mimic the warm patina seen on vintage examples. These distinctive markers set the Barakuda apart from the typical dive watch crowd. All of this sits atop a deep black dial, complete with a framed date window.
While the dials are quite similar, the rest of the watch differs in key ways. The re-edition features a sapphire bezel with markings for the first 15 minutes, unlike the fully graduated bakelite bezel of the original. It also comes with a sapphire crystal instead of a plexiglass one.
Additionally, the modern version includes small crown guards, a display case back, and a well-balanced 40mm case size. Its paired with a vintage-inspired rubber strap and a Blancpain-signed buckle.
The Barakuda re-edition was released in 2019 as a limited edition of 500 pieces, available exclusively through Blancpain boutiques. This example comes as a full setincluding the (huge!) presentation box, a bomb-proof inner case by Pelican, booklet, warranty card (noting a Christmas Eve 2019 sale), and a Blancpain divers logbook.
The watch remains in as-new condition and has been fully checked and regulated by our watchmaker.Ofcourse, were vintage lovers here at Bulang and Sonsbut this tastefully executed re-edition is a very cool, high-quality everyday wearer. Thats why we highly recommend it!
